In the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Black Sands Beach is a south-facing dark-sand beach located beneath the Marin Headlands. Just a short distance from the parking area on the walk are some excellent city views, but it is worthwhile to continue hiking all the way down to this incredible black sand beach.

Directions

Visitors should turn right onto Beach Rd, which dead ends at Black Sands Beach, as they descend the road into Shelter Cove. The King Range NCA is where they are, and the main parking is up top, according to a sign. To access the beach, visitors must descend the sidewalk. 

Attractions   

Near the beach access point, there is disabled parking. In addition to restrooms and a drinking fountain, the main parking lot also has interpretive panels that explain the local geology and other facts.

There are three miles of beach.5-mile stretch of rugged coastline. Your breath will be taken away immediately by the beach’s bare beauty. The vast blue ocean and the lush green cliffs are stunningly offset by the “black sand.”

The beach serves as the breath-taking beginning of the 25-mile Lost Coast Trail, which leads to Mattole Beach to the north and ends there. This coastal trail leads hikers to numerous wilderness campsites and off-the-beaten-path locations, making it an exceptional backpacking adventure.
